Translating "the market near the lake opens early" into Swahili, the decoder no longer relies on one squeezed vector. At every word it writes, it scores every English word, turns the scores into weights with a softmax, and reads a weighted mix. The grid shows who looks at whom. Then switch attention off, forget to scale the scores, or run the softmax over the wrong axis. This lesson needs JavaScript.
