Chalk symbols drawn by children at a school in Lusaka are squeezed into just two numbers and rebuilt. Every drawing lands as a dot in the code space, and a probe wanders across it while the decoder draws what lives there. A plain autoencoder leaves gaps full of nonsense; a VAE packs the codes into one smooth cloud. Then set the KL weight to zero or far too high, or sample far outside the cloud.
