A university lab in Kigali fine-tunes a 7-billion-parameter model on long documents. Training keeps every layer's working values for the backward pass, and at a few thousand tokens they no longer fit on the GPU. Checkpointing throws most of them away and recomputes them when needed. Then turn it off, keep only one checkpoint, or recompute everything when a little would do. This lesson needs JavaScript.
